The photo below is what allot of lighter textures look like after rendering in max when the Ambient light is changed.

Keep reading and find out how to make it look like this.

After you have made the 257x257 plane and added the displacement map and the light source you will need to add textures. Choose the right one and even if it is not the right size there is no reason to go into PSP or PS and tile it. That takes too much time. Just let max do all of the work for you. Find the texture you want,

Now add the texture to your object. Notice the tile section that is boxed. This is the tiling tool. Set it to what is needed for your taste.

This one looks best at 10. Make sure the texture you use is a seamless tile. Or you will have seams all over your track.
Now select the Material #1 tab marked in the red box below.

Once in there find the Color tab and change it to what is needed to make the shadows lighter. This will not make the whole texture lighter. Just the shadows. So you wont get the annoying light spots in textures.

See how nice that looks now. If the textures do turn out too dark I sugjest using a paint program to lighten them more. If you have any other questions email me at marmon4@pacbell.net And if you did this right it should look something like the picture below. (The amout of color needed may be different for other tracks and textures.)
